Folk
in the Gardens
The now traditional end-of-festival chill out. As in previous years,
this features a selection of local folk musicians, which this year will
include Lester Simpson and the Festival Chorus, Tom Travis, Trevor McMaster,
Acushla, Grassoline and Ian Roberts.
Lester Simpson is well known as one-third of top acapella singing act
Coope, Boyes and Simpson and as a presenter of FolkWaves on BBC in the
East Midlands. He also runs singing workshops each Wednesday in Bakewell
and as part of the Festival he has organised three special singing workshops
(see Wednesday 12, Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 for details). Participants
will then perform at Folk in the Gardens on Sunday 16.
Tom Travis is a well-known figure on the UK bluegrass and country music
scene, the organiser of the famous Edale Bluegrass Festival and organiser
of the monthly bluegrass club in High Lane near Stockport. Tom is also
an accomplished and experiences performer in his own right and may also
be accompanied by some of the house musicians from the club.
A welcome return of Trevor McMaster, whose renditions of Neil Young songs
have made him a popular favourite at clubs around Derbyshire.
An Arts Festival debut for four-piece band Acushla. Stalwarts of the Nottingham
session scene and of numerous folk bands they apply their multi-instrumental
talents to the songs and tunes of the Celtic tradition. www.acushlafolk.co.uk
Another new act for the Festival is Grassoline, a recently-formed three-piece
based in Chesterfield. With a line-up of fiddle, guitar and dobro it’s
no surprise that there is a distinctly American flavour to their sound.
Finally, look out for solo guitar and vocal from Ian Roberts, who performs
his own original compositions. www.myspace.com/ianroberts
